Martin Finger: Eye of the German Storm in Main Event
The PokerStars Championship Panama rolled out a $10,300 High Roller event to bookend the stop for players looking for high stakes action. The event drew 110 runners to the field, who juiced the prize pool to $1.06 million. Steve O’Dwyer and Sam Greenwood were the final two standing, a deal was struck and O’Dwyer won the trophy and $240,451.
O’Dwyer picked up his 16th tournament win – his ninth high roller title – and climbed to $16.5 million in lifetime tournament earnings. Greenwood picked up his ninth high roller final table cash.
Heads-up play with Greenwood began with O’Dwyer holding a 3-1 chip advantage but Greenwood doubled up out of the gate with pocket fours against ace king to bring the counts to even. After the double, they agreed to a deal that left close to $8,600 and the trophy on the table for the winner.
O’Dwyer was reportedly motivated to strike a deal after playing with a headache and the attention the Main Event was garnering nearby. “Once I doubled him up..it’s so loud in here and I had a really bad headache,” O’Dwyer said the live reporting team. “Once I didn’t bust him on that pot (fours vs ace king), I’m happy to just chop it up and get out of the room.”
Chris Hunichen and Anthony Zinno were the only two other Americans to cash in the event in fourth and sixth place respectively. Zinno is more well-known for his WSOP and WPT success but picked up his 11th cash of five-figures or better in a PokerStars branded event.
