The 2017 GPI Player of the Year race saw a big shakeup in the top 20 spots with events running around the globe. Bryn Kenney remains on top after earning 353 points to raise his total to above 2,800 points to keep pace with the rising competition with six new players entering the top 20.
Previously, only Kenney and Ari Engel were above 2,000 points but now eight players crossed the mark and players need over 1,400 points to crack the leader board.
Kenney won the €100,000 Super High Roller in Monte Carlo for $1.9 million, building on a year where’s already won two other $25,000 High Roller events. In his 17 cashes on the year only two events haven’t been high rollers – a $5,200 Turbo event in Panama and the $3,500 WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown.
Koray Aldemir climbed four spots to land inside the top five with two cashes at partypoker Millions and then took third place in the opening €10,000 event in Monte Carlo that Ole Schemion won.
Daniel Dvoress was the biggest mover as he jumped six spots in the rankings. The Canadian pro banked $1.7 million through the first week of PokerStars Championship Monte Carlo in three events and is among the chip leaders in the closing €25,000 High Roller. Dvoress finished in third place in the €100,000 SHR, runner-up in the €50,000 Eight Max and seventh place in a €25,500 Shot Clock High Roller.
Steve O’Dwyer made two final tables in Monte Carlo good for 236.86 and 192.65 points respectively. He’s been globe-trotting so far this year with cashes in the Bahamas, Panama, Macau, England and now Monaco.
Ryan Riess was on the cusp of the leader board after winning the WPT $10,000 Seminole Hard Rock Finale for $716,088 in April, but just like the other players on the list Riess made his way to the PSCMC as well. He finished in sixth place in the €10,000 opening event and cashed in the National Championship event in 77th place for another 102 POY points.
