Heading into this week’s WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic, the talk around the poker world centered on just how big this year-ending WPT event would get. Through Day 1, those in the “really, really big” camp look to be on the right side of that bet, as 605 players took their seats through the first five levels of play.
Las Vegas professional Brandon Meyers bagged the biggest stack of those Day 1 players, with just over 150,000, and Eric Baldwin also finished over the six-figure mark. Other notable players that advanced with sizable holdings include Dan Colman, who finished with 75,000, reigning WPT Player of the Year Benjamin Zamani with 70,000, and High Rollers Christian Christner, Byron Kaverman, and Rainer Kempe.
There were also a plenty of WPT Champions Club members that bagged chips. Olivier Busquet and Shawn Buchanan each finished near 50,000, while Darren Elias, Mohsin Charania, Tony Dunst, Sam Panzica, and Anthony Zinno all moved on with starting stacks.
Those former winners have tons of experience under the bright lights of the WPT final table, but to get to the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic final table, and PokerGO’s live stream, they all have a long way to go.
Day 2 of the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic begins at 12 PM PT and late registration and unlimited re-entry will remain open through Level 9. That will give players over five hours to get into the action and five hours to break last year’s record-setting mark of 791 entrants.
