WSOP Day 47 Recap: Espen Jørstad Becomes World Champion, Other Events Truncated Due to Evacuation

The 2022 WSOP Main Event champion is Norway’s Espen Jørstad, after the popular professional beat Australian Adrian Attenborough for the $10 million top prize in Las Vegas. With four more events in progress on the day, a bracelet was won in H.O.R.S.E. and three more events got closer to their final days. 

Jørstad Wins World Championship for $10 million 

A thrilling denouement to the 2022 WSOP Main Event saw Norwegian player Espen Jørstad win the $10 million top prize after beating Australian Adrian Attenborough to the title. The final day of the biggest poker tournament of all started with three players, but after Michael Duek lost out quickly with his top pair shot down by Attenborough’s nut straight, and after cashing for $4 million, the Argentinian’s departure saw the heads-up match to decide the title begin. 

Jørstad had the lead, but it was only a marginal one, with 284 million to Attenborough’s 235.5 million. That all changed after ‘The Tank Heard Round the World’. Jørstad’s top pair led to him shoving on the river, but Attenborough, with jack-four having only paired the four took 20 minutes debating with himself before eventually making the correct fold. 

That hand, once it eventually ended, gave Jørstad a 3:1 chip lead and another long single hand would decide the tournament. Oddly, Attenborough had exactly the same hand when he was in the same position, facing a river shove from Jørstad. The board had come 4-2-2-8-Q, and Jørstad had the winning hand, holding queen-deuce. But the implications of folding jack-four for a second time were too much for the Australian as he eventually made the call after more than eight minutes and in doing so, handed the world championship to Jørstad, who celebrated with his delighted rail.

Three Remain in H.O.R.S.E. Event #84 

Three players remain in the hunt for gold in the H.O.R.S.E. Event #84, which cost $3,000 to play. Polish player Tomasz Gluszko has the chip lead, with 5.3 million chips heading into the added final day after today failed to find a winner. Roberto Marin (4.4 million) is second in chips, with Lawrence Brandt, who has already won a gold bracelet this summer in Vegas, third in chips on 3.3 million. 

Earlier, at the final table, Perry Friedman had finished in seventh place for $24,403, before Kevin Gerhart failed to grab another bracelet, busting in fifth for $44,415. With Richard Tatalovich’s bust-out in fourth for $61,789, three players are in the hunt for what will be a top prize of $205,139.

The Closer Ends Prematurely Due to Evacuation 

Event #85, the $1,500-entry The Closer event, ended prematurely after an emergency situation saw players evacuate the Paris ballroom, with some accidents and a lot of upset suffered over a stampede for the exits. 

In what was eventually discovered to have been a burst window at MGM due to a projectile going through a glass door, rumors of gunshots sent players scrambling for the exits and a scary situation may have ended in the good news that there were no gunshots, but many players were either injured or worried. 

At the close of play, the Closer was put on pause and will make up the unplayed levels tomorrow. Players to end the truncated day with chips included Jason Wheeler (280,000), Ronnie Bardah (250,000), Adrian Moreno (225,000), Brandon Shack-Harris (175,000) and Chris Moorman (153,000). 

Just 45 Players Left in $10k 6-Max 

On a busy day at the felt, 179 players were reduced to 45 survivors in the $10,000-entry Event #86, the $10,000-entry NLHE 6-Max event. Bagging the lead was Daniel Rezaei (1,389,000), with Barry Woods (1,067,000) and Pavel Plesuv (1,058,000) the only other two players over a million in chips. 

Others to make the cut included Martin Zamani (858,000), Romain Lewis (801,000), Anthony Zinno (693,000) and Daniel Weinman (464,000), while others such as Jason Koon, Phil Ivey, Joe Cada, Chance Kornuth, Joao Vieira and Erik Seidel all busted on the day. 

Event #87 Ends with 208 In and Out of Seats 

The $5,000-entry 8-Max NLHE Event #87 ended with just 208 players remaining from 574 entries, but again did not entirely complete its day of action. Players such as Alex Foxen (456,000), David ‘ODB’ Baker (401,000), Yuri Dzivielevski (320,000), and the 2019 WSOP Main Event winner Hossein Ensan (292,000) survived with more chips than most, with others such as Mike Matusow (256,000), Liv Boeree (246,000), Igor Kurganov (195,000) and Koray Aldemir (170,000) all made the cut. 

Players to bust included Italian poker sensation Mustapha Kanit, Belgian regular Kenny Hallaert, WSOP and WPT winner Chance Kornuth, Chino Rheem and 2022 bracelet winner Nacho Barbero.
