Last night, the WSOP Main Event broke records as 4,571 players entered on the biggest single day in the event’s history. The action was live on PokerGO and ESPN throughout the day, with the biggest names in the game featured on the big stage.
In a true contrast of styles, Daniel Negreanu showed up right on time, Phil Ivey snuck in through the back hallways at the very last minute before registration closed, and Phil Hellmuth made his grand entrance surrounded by 14 models, one for each of his WSOP bracelets.
Sporting a Las Vegas Golden Knights jersey, Negreanu also dipped into some analysis of the recent John Tavares signing by his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs. Canada’s leading sports network, TSN, showed love for Negreanu by sharing the clip below.
After registration closed on Day 1C, and the numbers were confirmed, it became apparent that the 2018 edition of this tournament is the second biggest of all time. The 7,874 participants created a prize pool of $74 million, paying out 1,182 winners and a top prize of $8.8 million.
Battling on the secondary featured tables, Ivey bagged up 92,300 chips and Hellmuth advanced with 63,700. Former Main Event champions Martin Jacobson (38,400), Jonathan Duhamel (17,500) and Joe Cada (16,500) also advanced.
