Sam Soverel was unstoppable today going wire-to-wire at the final table, claiming the win in Event #2 of the 2021 U.S. Poker Open at the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas. Soverel bested a field of 65 entrants, defeating former U.S. Poker Open PLO event winner Jordan Cristos heads up vaulting him into second place on the championship standings.
Soverel started the final table with a massive chip lead, sitting on 3.5 million of the roughly 8 million chips in play with Dylan Weisman and Marc Brody being his nearest competitors sitting on fewer than half of that. Jordan Cristos, Maxx Coleman, and Matthew Ploof had roughly 15 big blinds each to start the day and it was Ploof who busted out first. On Ploof’s final hand, Soverel raised holding ace-jack-seven-deuce rainbow before Cristos made it 700,000 to go with single-suited aces. Ploof, who was next to act, moved all-in with single-suited kings, for 645,000. Cristos called and his aces held up to bring the field down to five.
Coleman, sitting on 12 big blinds, found himself a double up away from getting back in contention but things weren’t meant to be for him. On his final hand, Soverel raised with king-king-ten-nine and Coleman called with jack-ten-nine-three with one suit. The flop brought jack-eight-four and Coleman bet pot before Soverel put him all in. Coleman called but neither a second pair nor straight hit and he departed in fifth.
Soverel continued his dominance by busting Weisman in fourth place a whopping two hours later as chips moved slowly throughout the day. After a raise to 240,000 by the chip leader, Weisman made it 720,000 to go holding ace-king-nine-eight with three spades. Soverel gave it some thought before calling with jack-ten-ten-seven with two spades, and the flop brought out queen-six-four with two clubs. Weisman moved all in and Soverel called for the 290,000 chips that his opponent had left. Soverel’s tens held up reducing the field to just three players.
Brody was next to go in third place as he ended up all in with ace-ten-nine-seven for his last four big blinds versus the king-nine-eight-four of Cristos. The board gave Cristos a full house and heads up, putting him in a 2:1 underdog spot heading into heads-up play. Cristos was unable to close the gap with Soverel as he chipped down to 17 big blinds versus the 63 of his opponent. On the final hand of the tournament, Cristos raised holding ace-jack-four-deuce with two clubs and Soverel defended his big blind with ten-nine-seven-four with two diamonds. The flop brought out ace-nine-seven and Soverel check-called a bet of 400,000.
The turn brought a seven, giving Soverel trips, and Cristos moved all in for a two-thirds the size of the pot. Soverel made the call and he had Cristos drawing dead to claim the victory in this event.
