Sean Perry Wins 2022 PokerGO Cup Event #8 for $640,000

Sean Perry continues to put up big results on the PokerGO Tour (PGT). On Thursday, Perry topped the 32-entry field in Event #8: $50,000 No-Limit Hold’em at the 2022 PokerGO Cup, scooping up $640,000 in prize money. It was Perry’s second victory of the series.

Although Perry didn’t win the overall PokerGO Cup title, he did pick up 384 points for the 2022 PGT leaderboard and now sits second behind Nick Petrangelo. Last season, Perry finished third behind Ali Imsirovic and Michael Addamo on the 2021 PGT leaderboard.

“You better believe it, for sure I am,” Perry said of chasing the PGT Player of the Year title. “I took some time off at the beginning of this year, I missed a bunch of events, but this win has me motivated and they have something to fear.”

With Perry topping Brock Wilson in heads-up play, Jeremy Ausmus was crowned the 2022 PokerGO Cup series champion, which came with a $50,000 championship bonus. Ausmus cashed four times, with one win, one second-place finish, and one third-place finish, including finishing behind Perry and Wilson in the final event.

“It’s bittersweet,” Perry said of winning the final event but not the cup. “I’m happy I got a new Instagram picture to post, but it would’ve been awesome to win the trophy. I’m very happy that Jeremy won it. He’s an awesome guy, very honorable and great, and nobody has anything bad to ever say about him. Like I said, I came out here and I did what I did, won the tournament, but it wasn’t enough to win the overall player of the series. I’m still very happy with the result.”

Perry finished the 2022 PokerGO Cup with 616 points from three cashes. Two of those cashes were wins. In addition to winning Event #8: $50,000 No-Limit Hold’em, Perry won Event #2: $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em for $200,000. Ausmus finished the 2022 PokerGO Cup series with 658 points to top Perry.

“I felt like I played good,” Perry said. “I gave it my best shot to win. I knew I had to come out and win this tournament, which I did, and I can’t control much about what Jeremy did. He deserves the victory and I’m happy for him. He’s a great guy.”

The final event of the 2022 PokerGO Cup was Event #8: $50,000 No-Limit Hold’em. It drew a field of 32 entries, creating a prize pool of $1,600,000. The top five finishers reached the money, and all five of them came into the final day of play in contention to win the series title. Perry started with the chip lead on Day 2 and went on to win, with Ausmus’ third-place finish good enough to get him the cup.

Perry’s Road To the Event #8 Winner’s Circle

Perry was one of Event #8’s 32 entries. After registration closed, Perry worked his way into the group of the final 12 competitors, and that’s when he knocked out Nick Petrangelo in 12th place. It was a big pot that Perry three-bet an open from Alex Foxen, Petrangelo four-bet jam, and Perry call when action folded back to him. Perry had ace-king and was dominating Petrangelo’s ace-queen. Perry’s hand held to score him the knockout. That put Perry into the chip lead with 11 players left.

Then it was Darren Elias busting in 11th place and Sam Soverel going out in 10th. When the final nine players combined to one table, Perry was still in the lead.

Foxen took out Thomas Winters in ninth place and Brock Wilson busted Sean Winter in eighth. Then it was Foxen falling in seventh to put the tournament on the money bubble with six players remaining and five getting paid.

Although Jason Koon doubled through Wilson, he remained the short stack. On the other end of the spectrum, Perry worked to increase his chip lead. Then, Wilson doubled through Koon before Koon was eliminated in sixth place. Koon three-bet jammed over a raise from Daniel Negreanu and Negreanu called with ace-seven. Koon had pocket fours. Negreanu hit an ace on the river to win the pot and end Day 1.

Perry finished Day 1 with 2,780,000 in chips, which was a healthy chip lead. Wilson was in second with 1,225,000.

On the final day, Negreanu was the first player to bust when he ran pocket sevens into Wilson’s pocket tens. With Negreanu’s fifth-place elimination, he was officially out of the race for the PokerGO Cup series title. His elimination also meant that Nick Schulman, who was still remaining, was also eliminated from cup contention because Jeremy Ausmus made it to the final four.

Schulman was next out the door, hitting the rail in fourth place. His elimination meant that only Wilson could take the cup from Ausmus’ hands, but he would need to win the tournament to do it and have Ausmus finish no better than third.

Ausmus did go out third, and it was Perry who sent him packing. With the blinds at 25,000-50,000 with a 50,000 big blind ante, Perry shoved from the small blind against Ausmus’ big blind. Ausmus called for 890,000 with ace-two. Perry had ten-seven. Perry flopped a ten and held from there, eliminating Ausmus in third place.

Perry entered heads-up play with a commanding chip lead. His 5,610,000 were up against Wilson’s 810,000.

It didn’t take long for the money to go in. Perry found pocket jacks on the button and raised to 125,000. Wilson shoved for 760,000 with the king-queen of clubs and Perry snap-called. The jacks held up and Perry was crowned winner of Event #8 for $640,000. Perry’s win also meant Ausmus was the 2022 PokerGO Cup overall champion.

As mentioned, Nick Petrangelo remains at the top of the 2022 PokerGO Tour leaderboard with 1,066 points. Sean Perry moved into second place, and then Jeremy Ausmus moved into third.
