The SAM 940 Defender and Revealer
SAM Defender (NaI) - SAM Revealer (LaBr) with Reachback Program
The most capable isotope identifier in a portable package, the SAM 940 identifiers provide unsurpassed ease-of-use, speed and identification accuracy. The SAM Defender (NaI Detector) and the SAM Revealer (LaBr Detector) give a broad range of users a solution for both technical and non-technical isotope identification applications. There are several modes of operation allowing search, search/identify or alarm confirmation to be performed. The SAM is loaded with features for the end user, such as a GPS logging option, color display, CF Card, Ethernet, Web Support and an internal charger for AA batteries.
Upon power-up, the unit goes through a quick self-test and immediately begins monitoring. If the unit is transported into harsh climates, or after a lengthy power-down, temperature stabilization guarantees accurate identification results within the first few minutes. Detector options allow for coincidence matching, resolution as good as 2.8%, and excellent minimum detectable levels ( 1/10 the background radiation ). Furthermore, masked or shielded isotopes are quickly identified using an algorithm enhancement. The SAM systems are available from Berkeley Nucleonics or through various OEM suppliers, in both portable and stationary designs. The real-time spectroscopy and isotope identification is well suited for dozens of applications, from screening of packages and personnel to interdiction and decomissioning.

First Isotope Identifier (RIID) Designed After ANSI 42.34
Princeton Gamma-Tech Instruments has been on the leading edge of isotope identification and algorithm developments for decades. Our spectroscopy expertise grew out of our work in High Purity Germanium and Silicon detectors, dating back to the 1960's. Today, we supply many of the leading instrumentation and integration companies with algorithms and isotope identification capabilities for medical, health physics, nuclear security and transportation activities. The SAM Model 905 was our first spectroscopic area monitor capable of isotope identification in real time. The Model 935 SAM, a joint development by PGT and Berkeley Nucleonics, was the first indentifier that gave field operators the ability to move through areas without stopping. Sample collection was minimized and tremendous cost savings were realized. The Model 940 was the first isotope identifier designed after the publication of ANSI 42.34 (American National Standard Performance Criteria for Hand-held Instruments for the Detection and Identification of Radionuclides). In conformance with ANSI 42.34 we have engineered a product to excel in performance and packaging.Reachback Defender
For the first responder, this is the ideal software utility. ANSI compliant spectral reports are easily generated and downloadable for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reachback. An embedded version of this software utility is included.Quantum Revealer
For advanced the most sophisticated users, the latest version of our quantitative analysis package, Quantum Revealer, will allow users of the SAM Revealer to perform a range of post-process analyses with unprecedented functionality. Geoplotting of radiological data, mapping and surveying of facilities or logging complex data can be performed in real time on a local PC or over a network. Advanced features like peak deconvolution, geometry modeling and multi-source comparisons are quickly addressed also by the Quantum Revealer operator. The SAM Defender include a useful Compact Flash Memory (CF) to enable a range of operator and management tasks. For storage and transfer of data, CF Cards may be used to load updated ANSI Compliant data iles onto PCs or other peripherals. Upgrades to the operating system may also be emailed from the factory and loaded locally onto your CF Card for system updates. Custom Libraries, User Profiles and Management Protection can all be addressed with this versatile tool.
GPS Option
For applications which require time stamping and latitude/longitude information recorded with radiological measurements, a convenient GPS package is available for the SAM 940. The GPS package includes a commercially available, WAAS-enabled GPS device from the Garmin “Geko”* series. Applications for GPS related spectroscopic data range from topographical map developments and land reclamation to accident mitigation and perimeter monitoring. With the GPS package, the ANSI N42.42 compliant spectral reports will include coordinate information, with a typical position accuracy of 3 meters. Other software features include a 2-d map of collected measurements and position-based spectrum searches.* “Geko” is a trademark of Garmin International Inc.
